Mark Gainsborough was appointed Executive Vice President for Shell Global Commercial on 15 August 2011.
Mark has worked for Royal Dutch Shell in a wide range of sales, marketing, supply, trading, strategy and business development roles over the last 33 years.
In his previous role Mark was responsible for Shell’s Downstream strategy, mergers acquisitions and divestments and Alternative Energy. Prior to that Mark worked in Supply & Distribution, initially in developing Refining and Supply Strategy and more recently running the operational supply business in Europe.
In previous roles he has developed Shell’s future fuels strategy and made some of Shell’s first investments in advanced biofuels technology. He also led the central team which managed the global roll out of Shell’s premium retail fuels, in the years before the Global Retail Business was formed. He has extensive experience of the transportation sector, including 3 years as Global Sales & Marketing director for Shell Aviation. Mark’s experience in lubricants includes front line sales and base oil manufacturing, supply and trading. He also worked with many of the leading auto companies on the WBCSD sponsored Sustainable Mobility Project, published in 2005. Mark has worked extensively on a range of environmental and sustainability issues and a few years ago completed a Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy.
Outside Shell, Mark’s professional interests include the healthcare sector, until recently serving as a non-executive director for one of the UK’s National Health Service Trusts.
