Sir Ian Wood

Senior Advisor to the UK Government and former Chairman and CEO,
Wood Group

Sir Ian was born and educated in Aberdeen. After graduating with a first class Honours degree in 1964 he joined the family business, John Wood & Son, and became the Managing Director in 1967. He is best known for his work in the North Sea oil industry and with Wood Group, which he was largely responsible for transforming from a company of modest size, serving a primarily local market, to a large corporation with operations in over 50 countries. He served as Wood Group's CEO from 1967 to 2006 and as Chairman until 2012. Wood Group is now the UK's largest energy services company, employing more than 28,000 people in more than 50 countries. He has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Aberdeen in 1984, Doctor of Business Administration by The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen in 1998 and Doctor of Technology by Glasgow Caledonian University in 2002. Since 2004, he has served as Chancellor of The Robert Gordon University. He was awarded the CBE in 1982 in the New Year Honours List and was knighted in 1994 in the New Year Honours List. Most recently he advised the UK Government on a review to revolutionize the UK offshore oil and gas recovery and its regulation. The report led by Sir Ian and the recommendations put forward by his team will benefit the UK energy industry for decades to come.
